Born in Bene Vagienna on 27 March 1823, and older brother of Cardinal Luigi, Fr. Giuseppe Oreglia di Santo Stefano was among the founders of the well-known and prestigious magazine of the Italian Jesuits, La Civilità Cattolica, founded in Naples in 1850. A literary genius and one of the most brilliant Jesuit polemicists of the 19th century, he wrote for forty years in the well-known magazine, of which he was also editor from 1865-1868, devoting himself to contemporary news, books and polemics with liberal and anti-clerical magazines. Remaining faithful to the fourth vow of the Society of Jesus, namely fidelity and direct service to the Pope, he identified Freemasonry as the true enemy of the Church. Starting from these convictions, which continued to mature after his transfer to Rome in 1871, he began a series of studies on the Freemasons, their rituals and statutes and their relation to Judaism and Jewish Kabbalah. In his later years, at the insistence of the doctors, he left Rome and moved to Chieri in search of a better air for his health. On the evening of October 29, 1895, Fr. Giuseppe quietly passed away in the Torinese city, where, on August 10, 1842, as a nineteen-year-old boy, abandoning the world to follow Christ, he had been welcomed as a novice in the Society of Jesus.1

Part I

How since the beginning the Christians have not persecuted the Jews, but rather the Jews have always persecuted the Christians.

Of the Pro Iudaeis of the Jew Treves, disguised as a false Christian under the guise of Corrado Guidetti, Doctor in letters, we believe to have in the ten articles published so far demonstrated sufficiently the notable vanity. And although many other points of his booklet could still provide us with abundant material for a literary duel in the hall of Reason in Padua where he set us an appointment without maintaining it (and who has since heard from or seen him?); however in order not to continue after a fugitive, not preoccupying ourselves more with him but moving on, we will come now to keep the promise made to our readers in article X published on page 173 in Vol. 1 of this series. The promise is to show that Christians never persecuted Jews as the Jews and liberal judaizers and freemasons continually lie, but that instead the Jews always persecuted the Christians according to the truth of history. And that if here or there we cross paths with Treves-Guidetti, we will not fail to greet him in passing without entering further with those who do not show up for the long and more detailed discussions. So let us begin again with a new treatise on the proposed subject, which is not entirely useless, as we believe.

Since—even not wanting to take into account those many Jews and non-Jews, who possessed by Satan, by demons or by spirits, that is, moved by a satanic hatred of the Christian name, and for this always ready not only to swallow but also to cook up every day calumnies and paradoxes as long as they shame and spite Christianity: and therefore, like every other error and lie, they easily admit this one specifically concerning the Christian persecution of the Jews—even, we mean to say, without wanting to take these into account, it is nevertheless sufficiently clear that right now there are even among the not unlearned and bad Christians those who, frequently and too easily allowing themselves to eat the food made by their enemies, willingly lend them their faith, as in the rest, also in this most false point: that is, that it was not the Jews that always persecuted Christianity above all else, and even now continue to fiercely do so, but that instead the Christians always have and continue even now to persecute the Jews wherever and whenever they can. So much so that, thanks no less to Jewish perfidy than to our own gullibility, it now passes as definitive and incontrovertible that the Jewish people is a martyr people and we Christians are therefore its tyrants and its executioners. For this, the Jew, among us, rightly laughs at us. Take for example the Vessillo israelitico [Israelite Banner] of Casale, which on page 47 of its February issue of the year 1886 clearly reports triumphantly that Pietro Sbarbaro, in his periodical Le Forche Caudine [The Caudine Forks], on 13 January 1885, wrote, “I cannot, without trembling, fix my attention on the long and infamous epic of the misfortunes and the secular martyrdom of the glorious Jewish race.” How the Ghettos must laugh seeing one who boasts of being a Christian proclaim a glorious martyr the Jewish race and cruelly attack his own Christian race! And if only many other Christians more knowledgeable than Sbarbaro, which doesn’t take much, did not daily say even worse—by which the Jews are prodigiously emboldened and hold us in profound contempt. We read, in fact, to cite just one example, on page 137 of the Les Déicides [The Deicides] of the Jew Cohen published in Paris in 1861 that:

The irresistible truth torn from the conscience of the Reformer Galileo at the last moment of his life was: Father forgive them because they know not what they do. Yes: the Jews did not know nor could they have known what they were doing. So how could they be guilty of Deicide? Guilty of a crime that served against them as an iniquitous pretext for one thousand eight hundred years of persecution? But far from forgiving, Christians always maintained against the Jews a hatred without respite and without mercy. And for long centuries of torments, millions of innocent Jews atoned for the supposed crime of their fathers. This is how Christians practiced that beautiful word of forgiveness and forgetfulness. Oh blind passions! Oh despotism of interests! Oh cruel violation of the holy laws of charity!

It seems to us that excluding, if it were possible, every religious idea, such Jewish insults to all the non-Jews of the world, all accused of iniquitous hatred, of cruelty and of blind, secular and indeed millennial passions against the Jews who boast of their innocence, should make the free thinkers, freemasons and liberals themselves blush, and make them seriously reflect if the work that they so often do in chairs, in books and in newspapers is wise, humanly speaking—where, under the pretext of science and of criticism, falsifying and uprooting history—they willingly sacrifice their own honor and that of the whole non-Jewish, civilized world to the glory and homage of only the Jew. Who, among us, rightly laughs at us as people who believe ourselves to be more critical, knowledgeable and progressive the more we approve of the reproaches under which he continually covers us. It is in fact well known that Jews, and especially German Jews, are essentially those who, first to Ernest Renan and then to his and their other parrots of Latin and Christian lineage, taught and indeed dictated the Masonic and liberal anti-Christian lesson. That lesson which now—pompously dressed in the false title of modern criticism and modern science by the universities, by the high schools, by the books and by the journals—adding insult to injury, daily pours on our heads Jewish and foreign insult and disgrace.

It will therefore be useful to rectify, concerning the point mentioned above, these twisted ideas, and to demonstrate as we promised, with the facts in hand, that the Jews were never properly speaking persecuted nor much less hated by the Christians, who have for their law the love of their neighbor, charity toward all, the forgiveness of offences and the love of their enemies; let us also say that for their own just defense against Jewish hatred and Jewish persecutions, Christians have had to and must even presently in many places utilize means more or less coercive and violent according to the various times and the various circumstances. And that if sometimes Christians too oppressed by Jewish perfidy went too far, and perhaps even now go beyond, here or there, the terms of the just defense, the Church always prevailed to restrain the Christians and protect the Jews, as ancient and modern history teaches and we in turn will demonstrate. This approach being the exact opposite of that of the Synagogue, which, from Christ to us, has by its very Talmudic law the hatred of all that is not Jewish and especially against the Christians; nor did it ever cease to add wood to this fire and to blow furiously into it, always drawing from the writings and from the teachings of its Rabbis the Jewish hatred against the Christian name, from Christ to us, according to their own iniquitous laws.

And to begin, as is right, from the beginning, admirable and entirely new is the audacity with which the Jews and the modern Judaizers now print publicly in our faces what previously only hiddenly what they dared to say in their top-secret books and discourses; that is, in the first place, that Jesus Christ was condemned by them justly and according to their law: in the second place that, as to the execution of the sentence, they are innocent of it, not having laid their hand on him; thirdly, that even if the Jews of the first century of the common era had laid their hands on him, the Jews of the later and especially those of the present century XIX would always be innocent of it; and finally, fourthly, that, as Cohen said in the cited place of his Déicides, always unjust therefore were the Christians, from the time of Christ to our own, that is to say all of Europe and indeed the entire civilized world, that for this iniquitous pretext made them atone for one thousand and eight hundred years of persecution the supposed (note well the supposed) crime of their fathers.

Now as for the first point, that is that Jesus Christ was by the Jews condemned justly and according to their law; without wishing to copy here that which is known to everyone except to the Jews and was victoriously sustained even in our times against the Jew Salvador by the hardly Christian Dupin, the light of French jurisprudence, we will content ourselves with noting the infamous contradiction in which the Jew claims on one hand to be innocent toward the Christians and on the other confesses to have justly and according to their law condemned Jesus Christ. If you Jews have condemned Jesus Christ, even if justly and according to your law, then you at the beginning first condemned and persecuted, even if justly and according to your law, Christianity in its very Head and Founder. But this and no other is now the question: whether Christians persecuted the Jews or rather, from the beginning the Jews, in persecuting Christ himself, persecuted Christians and Christianity. You Jews always tell us that you have been persecuted by us Christians. We Christians say instead that we have always been persecuted by you Jews. And to demonstrate our affirmation, let us first cite the death sentence and crucifixion of Jesus Christ obtained by you Jews and in part also carried out. How do you deny this? You deny it by affirming its justice and legality. It is therefore a fact that, according to your confession, you have been deicides and persecutors to death, from the beginning, of Christ and Christianity, who was toward you most innocent from the beginning and never persecuted you.

Even worse is the second point: that is, that the Jews are innocent for not having by their own hand materially crucified Our Lord. Since, first of all, if justly, as they claim, and according to their law they condemned him, why do they excuse themselves as not having also materially and with their own hands executed the, according to them, most just and legal sentence? They should, on the contrary, boast of it, and rather be sorry that they could not, because of the condition of their servitude to the Romans, also materially carry it out with their own hands. That if, by force, they were not able to carry it out, as they would certainly have wished to do, with what right do they come now to present themselves to us as lambs innocent of their cries of Sanguis Eius, moreover, invoked upon their own heads and of those of their children also present? “Justly, they say, we condemned him. Forcibly, they say, we could not carry out the condemnation with our own hands. We did what we could.” Let it be so. But for this, are they not perhaps guilty, they and their children, of shedding the blood of Christ? Listen to Saint Augustine, at whose time the Jews were already lying about that which they continue to lie. “Let not the Jews tell us (Psalm 63), we did not kill Jesus Christ. For this end they delivered him to Pilate, and they themselves might seem as it were innocent of his death. Pilate was, in comparison with them, innocent. He did what he could to save him. You Jews killed him with the sword of your tongue. This is the sagacity employed by the Jews. They said: Let us kill him; as that we may not ourselves be judged to have killed. They bribed one of his disciples: they procured false witnesses: they acted fraudulently. They said: Let Christ not be betrayed by us, but by his disciple: let him not be killed by us, but by the judge: let us do all, and let us seem to have done nothing.” I think I see modern Judaism; as it appears, for example, in modern Freemasonry, which is completely Jewish, led by the nose by the Jews who dictated to it the legends, the sacred words, the calendar, the codes, the rites, the clothes and the entire organism of the Synagogues. And a Jew is now the Grand Master of Italian Freemasonry. But he must be, as the saying goes, a very young devil. Since, first of all, as soon as he was elected, he taxed every freemason a hundred liras; which caused a general disbandment in Rome and a domestic revolution in Florence, Milan and Turin. And caused the various Lodges to go one after the other rebelling against the Jewish Grand Orient of Rome or trying to constitute themselves as independent Powers (as these impotent men say). But maybe this devil is actually older than he looks and the accomplice of another even older than him, who—seeing the present Freemasonry becoming more and more brutalized, awkward and, so to speak, reprobate, that is democratized, republicanized and antidynastisized and, what is worse, less and less anticlericalized—wants to, it seems, dismantle it in a clever way and without appearing to have done it for Jewish benefit.
